Companies including Sony Corp. (6758) and Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) halted output at plants after an 8.9- magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, damaging production facilities and causing power outages.

Sony halted and evacuated six factories in northeastern Japan, said Yasuhiro Okada, a spokesman at the Tokyo-based company. He said the company was assessing the impact of power outages and damage to its facilities in the region, which make Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads and batteries.

The quake, Japan’s strongest in at least a century, struck at 2:46 p.m. local time 130 kilometers (81 miles) off the coast of Sendai, north of Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The tremor caused a tsunami as high as 10 meters (33 feet) that inundated northern towns and caused buildings to shake violently as far away as Tokyo. At least 26 people were killed by the wave and many were missing, state broadcaster NHK Television said.

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, and its affiliates closed three factories, said Shiori Hashimoto, a spokeswoman in Tokyo. The Toyota City-based carmaker began production at a new plant in Miyagi this year that makes Yaris compact cars and has capacity to make 120,000 vehicles a year.

Honda, Nissan

Honda Motor Co. closed two factories, said Hajime Kaneko, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based carmaker. A 42-year-old male employee was crushed to death by a collapsing wall at a research and development center in Tochigi prefecture and about 30 other employees were injured, Kaneko said.

Nissan Motor Co. closed four factories including car plants in Tochigi and Kanagawa and engine factories in Kanagawa and Fukushima, Mitsuru Yonekawa, a spokesman for the Yokohama-based company, said by phone. Two workers suffered minor injuries, he said.

A refinery on fire outside Tokyo exploded, while nuclear power stations were shut down. Narita airport, Tokyo’s main international gateway, was closed and bullet-train services suspended. More than 4 million homes were without power, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

Toyota shares traded in Frankfurt fell as much as 3.8 percent, the biggest intraday decline since Jan. 21, to 30.45 euros as of 10:15 a.m. local time. Honda dropped as much as 4.5 percent and Sony slid as much as 2.5 percent in the German city.

Fuji Heavy

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, closed five factories, said Kenta Matsumoto, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based company.

Toyota Boshoku Corp. (3116), a Toyota Motor supplier, reported damage at a plant in Miyagi. Roads were also cracked near its factory, said Misako Nagata, a spokeswoman for the parts maker. Denso Corp. (6902), Japan’s biggest auto-parts maker, said a plant under construction south of Miyagi was damaged. All of its workers were safe, said Goro Kanemasu, a spokesman for the company.

Sapporo Holdings Ltd. (2501), Japan’s fourth-biggest beermaker, suspended operations at factories in Sendai and Chiba due to power outages and damage, Katsuhito Ogawa, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based company, said by e-mail.

Oriental Land Co., the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, will close the amusement park tomorrow to inspect facilities, the company said in a statement today. It hasn’t yet decided whether to open the resort on March 13. No injuries were reported at the resort, the company said.

Panasonic, Canon

Panasonic Corp. (6752) said several employees at its three factories in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures sustained minor injuries. The Osaka-based company is still assessing the damage to facilities, Yuichi Takatoku, a Tokyo-based spokesman for the company, said by phone.

Canon Inc. (7751), the world’s biggest camera maker, didn’t suffer damage to plants that would halt output, said Hirotomo Fujimori, a spokesman in Tokyo, where the company is based.

The quake was followed by a 7.1-magnitude aftershock at 4:25 p.m., the U.S. Geological Service said.

Boats smashed into walls as the tsunami struck, inundating buildings with black water full of debris across stretches of coast north of Tokyo, NHK images showed. One large building was lifted off its foundations and dragged into the ocean.

Farmland was flooded with burning debris in some areas as the tidal surge swept inland. Large boats were left stranded after the water surged back to sea.

Airport Flooded

The airport in Sendai, a city of 1 million people 310 kilometers north of Tokyo, was flooded by the tsunami, according to NHK footage.

Japan Airlines Corp. diverted 22 flights to other airports, the company said in a faxed statement. In total, 27 flights have been impacted by the quake, affecting 5,290 people, the statement said.

East Japan Railway Co. (9020), the nation’s largest train operator, suspended operations of trains in the Tokyo area along with its bullet-train operations, according to its website. Tokyo Metro Co., the capital’s largest subway operator, said on its website it stopped trains, forcing commuters to line up for taxis.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan ordered the army to aid rescue efforts after the quake, which struck 373 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.

100+ drop is almost nothing for Nikkei as it can swing within +200 to -200 in normal trading day nows a day.

With only 2 nuclear plants problem, less electric supplied this is a big damage on any indutrial not listed above. Even excluding the insurance market drop , physical communication lost, panic sell and etc. 500+ drop in next one week might be still luckey for Japan (if the stock market is not announced closed) .

Anyway, this is fully speculation.

Electric, Toshiba, East Japan Rail May Be Among Most Hurt by Quake

Tokyo Electric Power Co., Toshiba Corp., East Japan Railway Co. and Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. are among companies that may be most hurt by the strongest earthquake on record to hit Japan, analysts and investors said.

Tokyo Electric, battling to avoid a meltdown at its Fukushima nuclear plant, faces “severe” rebuilding costs and Toshiba’s nuclear business may see increased scrutiny, said Minoru Matsuno, president of Value Search Asset Management Co. in Tokyo.

Radiation levels near the Fukushima plant, located 135 miles (217 kilometers) north of Tokyo, rose above Japanese limits after an explosion yesterday destroyed the walls of the reactor building. Nippon Steel Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp. and Canon Inc. today joined the growing number of companies saying their operations were hurt following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake on March 11 that rocked Japan and triggered tsunamis.

“For Tokyo Electric and anything nuclear-related, it’s going to be pretty bad,” said Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive officer at　Myojo Asset Management Japan Co., a Tokyo-based hedge fund advisory firm. “The biggest fear I have is what will happen at the nuclear power plant as it would be a real disaster if the situation deteriorates into another Chernobyl.”

Kan Orders Toshiba
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average tumbled 1.7 percent in the final minutes of Tokyo trading March 11 after the earthquake hit.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan ordered Toshiba President Norio Sasaki to help with efforts to stop radiation leaking from the Fukushima plant, Kyodo News reported today, without citing anyone. Takashi Mizuno, a spokesman at Japan’s largest maker of nuclear reactors, confirmed the meeting, though he couldn’t verify the topics discussed. Toshiba said yesterday it shut a semiconductor plant in the northern prefecture of Iwate.

East Japan Rail, which lost an estimated 60.2 billion yen ($731 million) from the 2004 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake, has the potential to incur a “major negative impact on earnings” because of the disaster, Hitoshi Hosoya, a Tokyo-based analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co., wrote in a March 11 report.

East Japan, the nation’s largest train operator, suspended operations of trains in the Tohoku and Tokyo areas, along with its bullet-train operations on the day of the earthquake. As of today, the company, known as JR East, hadn’t resumed operations for trains going to Tohoku, Yamagata and Akita, according to its website.

Silicon Wafers
Fumihisa Nishino, executive officer of JR East’s transport safety department, said the company hasn’t decided on when to resume Shinkansen and regional trains in the Tohoku district.

Shin-Etsu, which makes the silicon wafers needed to produce semiconductors, said yesterday it stopped operations at its manufacturing complex in Annaka, Gunma prefecture; the Kashima Plant in Kamisu, Ibaraki prefecture; and the Shirakawa Plant in Nishigo Village, Fukushima prefecture. The company will resume operations after safety inspections and measures have been completed, it said on its website.

Disruptions at Shin-Etsu and Sumco Corp. account for about 60 percent of the world’s electronic wafers, will undermine global supply, which may benefit the No. 3 producer, Wacker Chemie AG’s Sitronic, according to Klaus Ringel, an analyst at Credit Agricole Cheuvreux. Shin-Etsu produced most of its wafers in the region that was hit the hardest, according to Cheuvreux.

Sony’s Batteries
Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Financial Holding Co., wrote March 11 that Sony, which has factories in Fukushima-ken and Tochigi-ken in northern of Japan, may be affected. The company makes about 10 percent of the world’s laptop batteries, according to Chan. The company said today that it’s halting production at eight factories that make products ranging from Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads and batteries. That’s two more plants than the company said on March 11.

Canon, Nippon Steel, Suzuki Motor, JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp., Nippon Paper Group Inc., Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and convenience-store operator Lawson Inc. today disclosed they were affected or were suspending operations, joining the growing number of Japanese companies from Sony to Toyota Motor Corp.

The list may grow. Kyodo reported today that Hino Motors Ltd. and Nippon Paper Group Inc. are suspending operations, while Asahi newspaper reported Nikon Corp. has suspended operation at its camera plant in Miyagi prefecture.

Outside Japan, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Chairman Chang Xiaobing said today the company is fixing Internet broadband services that have been disrupted by the Japanese earthquake. Taiwan’s AU Optronics Corp. said affilate M Setek Co. shut down operations in Sendai and Soma.

Damaged Cars
Yesterday, spokesmen at Japan’s three-largest carmakers -- Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. -- said thousands of new vehicles were damaged. Toyota will suspend production at its dozen factories in Japan and its body makers on March 14, while Honda said it will stop production at factories in Sayama, Mouka, Hamamatsu and Suzuka.

Oriental Land Co., operator of the Tokyo Disney Resort, shut the amusement park and said March 12 it will decide March 21 when it will reopen. Shutting the park for three months may cost Walt Disney Co. about $50 million in lost royalty revenue, according to Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch.

NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan’s largest mobile-phone operator, said yesterday it’s restricting as much as 80 percent of voice traffic in northern Japan, while Softbank Corp. said had no timeframe as to when its service would return to normal.

Growing List
On the day of the earthquake, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, said it closed five factories, while Toyota Boshoku Corp. reported damage at a plant in Miyagi. Denso Corp., Japan’s biggest auto-parts maker, said a plant under construction south of Miyagi was damaged.

Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Mitsubishi Materials Corp. and Dowa Holdings Co. said March 11 they stopped operations at metal smelters following the earthquake.

Construction companies may benefit. Fukuda Corp. shares surged 30 percent in the final minutes of trading on March 11. Construction companies that may gain include Daiwa House Industry Co., JGC Corp., Kajima Corp., Obayashi Corp., Sekisui House Ltd., Shimizu Corp., and Taisei Corp., according to Keybank Capital Markets Inc.
Rebuilding Japan

The major rebuilding that will occur will also likely benefit timber-related companies as wood is more earthquake resistant than concrete, according to Dundee Capital Markets Inc. Acadian Timber Corp., Ainsworth Lumber Co., Canfor Pulp Products Inc., Interforest Ltd., Louisiana-Pacific Corp., Norbord Inc., Plum Creek Timber Co., TimberWest Forest Corp., West Fraser Timber Co. and Weyerhaeuser Co. are among those that may benefit, according to Dundee.

“The quake will put a huge brake on the economy, so almost everyone including Shin-Etsu and JR East will get hit,” Mitsuo Shimizu, an equity analyst at Cosmo Securities Co. in Tokyo, said by telephone today. “Japan can’t have tight budget anymore to rebuild the country. Construction companies and cement makers will benefit from rebuilding.”

บริษัทวิจัยสินเชื่อ โตเกียว โชโกะ รีเสิร์ช รายงานว่า ในจำนวนดังกล่าวประกอบด้วยบริษัทล้มละลาย 96 แห่ง อาทิเช่นบริษัทที่ขาดการชำระหนี้กับทางธนาคาร และบริษัทที่กำลังจะล้มละลาย 49 แห่ง อาทิเช่นบริษัทที่อยู่ระหว่างการถูกฟ้องล้มละลาย
